About Tala

Dr. Tara Collins started Tala Integrative Psychiatry to provide the best comprehensive, culturally competent, and compassionate care using a holistic, evidence-based approach. As a board-certified psychiatrist, registered yoga teacher, and Ayurvedic Wellness Counselor, Dr. Collins appreciates that emotional balance and well-being must incorporate a person's physical, emotional, cultural, interpersonal, behavioral, nutritional, environmental and spiritual aspects.

 

After a thorough diagnostic evaluation, Tala Integrative Psychiatry will provide a treatment plan that may include:

  •  Medication

  •  Psychotherapy

  •  Herbs and other botanicals

  •  Yoga

  •  Meditation & breathing techniques

  •  Lifestyle modification

  •  Dietary suggestions

  •  Referrals to other specialists, e.g. acupuncturist


Dr. Collins works collaboratively with other providers to ensure optimal care.

 

A former assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of California, San Francisco, Dr. Collins remains passionate about patient care, teaching, and mentoring. She has presented at local and national conferences and is published in academic journals.

 

Dr. Collins is active in the community, partnering with local nonprofit organizations to teach emotional competence workshops and dream interpretation, and serves on the board of two nonprofit community agencies. She also teaches yoga classes at Ocean Beach Yoga and throughout the community.

About Tala
Education & Training

Dr. Collins graduated summa cum laude with a B.S. in Biology from Howard University, and received her M.D. and M.P.H. at Emory University.  She completed an adult psychiatry residency, where she served as Chief Resident of Intensive Services, and a forensic psychiatry fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco.  She is board certified in adult psychiatry and forensic psychiatry.  

 

Dr. Collins has training in a variety of therapy modalities, including:

  • Psychodynamic Therapy

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

  • Interpersonal Therapy

  • Dialectical Behavioral Therapy

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

  • Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy

Dr. Collins completed a 200-hour yoga teacher training at the Ocean Beach Yoga School and a 50-hour Yin Yoga teacher training with Bernie Clark.  She is a registered yoga teacher with Yoga Alliance.  She completed the Ayurveda Wellness Counselor program at the Kerala Ayurveda Academy, where she is currently in the Ayurveda Wellness Practitioner Program.  

 

Dr. Collins has received several honors and awards, including the Young Investigator Award from the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law, and was a John A. Watson Faculty Scholar at the University of California, San Francisco.
